Drawing sheet 013: Every admin screen is a founder tax, paid at 8am.

General notes

  1. 01The doctrine: control, don't own. Do not write code that needs a human at a dashboard to keep the day moving.
  2. 02Before any admin action, two questions. Can the user do it themselves? Can a cron job? If neither, the feature is probably wrong.
  3. 03Every screen you keep is a promise that someone sits in front of it every morning. Usually that someone is you.

As posted

Every admin screen is a hidden founder tax, collected at eight in the morning.

The doctrine I run a marketplace by is three words: control, don't own. Do not write code that needs a human at a dashboard to keep the day moving. Push the work to the people who have the context: the vendor, the buyer, the rider, or a scheduled job.

Before building any admin action I ask two questions. Can the user do this themselves? Can a cron job? If the answer to both is no, the feature is probably wrong, not the automation.

Every screen you keep is a promise that someone will sit in front of it every morning. Early on, that someone is you. Later it is a hire whose whole job is the screen. Either way the platform has a manual step in its critical path that never shows up on the roadmap, because it always gets done.

There are exceptions. Fraud review needs judgement. Refund disputes need judgement. The doctrine is not against judgement. It is against screens that exist because automation was never attempted.

Hold point, on a building site, means work stops until an inspector signs. On this set it marks an opinion with stakes. This one has cost me mornings.
